Guided Reading Homework

Dear Families,
In term 3 our first grade guided reading groups have begun receiving homework assignments to complete before their next group. Sometimes the students have a chance to start this assignment in class. Often, they will need to take it home to complete. Guided reading is when a group of students all read the same book with a teacher. In this supported environment we work on a variety of skills, from ways to decode challenging words to reading smoothly and thinking about what we have read. The homework assignments usually help students to practice reflecting and thinking about the text in some way.
We need your support! This is a new routine for many students and they need help at home remembering to complete their assignments. Please check in with your child nightly to see if they have homework that is additional to the reading log. If a child met in their reading group that day, then they should be bringing the book from that group home for their reading anyway, so there will not be double reading to do. The homework assignment, along with the corresponding book, should be in the home folder on the day it is assigned. You may assist your child in reading directions, discussing the book, etc. but of course the ideas and handwriting should be your child's. Groups meet approximately every two days. It is best to do the assignment when it is fresh, on the day it is assigned, but it is okay to take an extra day if necessary. The assignment is due at the group's next meeting.
Here is a list of our reading groups' scheduled meeting days to assist you. Your child can tell you which group(s) s/he is in. Again, the homework should be completed and returned to school by the group's next meeting day.
Day 1 - no groups
Day 2 - Dolphins, Gorillas, Fire Opal,
Day 3 - Dolphins, Iolite, Jellyfish, Lions
Day 4 - Dolphins, Gorillas, Fire Opal, Jellyfish, Monkeys,
Day 5 - Dolphins, Jellyfish, Ostriches
Day 6 - Jellyfish, Dolphins, Iolite, Kangaroos

Thanks for your support and please let me know if you have any questions.

Ms Kelly
